KAITO is a generation 1 and the first Japanese male VOCALOID, developed by YAMAHA Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media. He was released in February 14, 2006.
In the beginning of VOCALOID production, VOCALOID wasn't that well known so selling 1,000 units for a synthesizing software was considered as a success. He only sold about 500 units while his female counterpart, MEIKO, sold over 3,000. He was the main reasons why there wasn't any male Vocaloid for while and was the first one whose voicebank was announced as a failure.
Even after his popularity rose after Hatsune Miku's success, the VOCALOID production was leaning more into producing female VOCALOIDs. MEIKO and Hatsune Miku's voicebank sold much better and were much more successful.
KAITO's V3 update which was released in February 15, 2013, was developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media.
