General Information:

Hanasaku Iroha (Japanese: 花咲くいろは lit. The Colors of Blooming) is a Japanese manga series by P.A. Works, the same corporation behind stellar shows like True Tears, Another and Canaan.
Hanasaku Iroha has themes of romance, slice of life and coming of age.
Hanasaku Iroha was illustrated by Eito Chida and serialized in Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine since December 2010.
As of October 2012, Square Enix has published a total of five volumes of Hanasaku Iroha.

Hanasaku Iroha was later developed for an anime television series directed by none other than Masahiro Ando.
The screenplay for Hanasaku Iroha was written by Mari Okada and character designs by Mel Kishida.
Hanasaku Iroha was licensed by NIS America and premiered on Tokyo MX on April 2011.
Hanasaku Iroha ended with 26 lighthearted episodes on September 2011.

Plot:

Hanasaku Iroha follows the optimistic and energetic Ohana Matsumae, a 16-year old teenager left in the care of her grandmother after her single mother runs off with her boyfriend trying to dodge debt collectors.
Ohana has never met nor spoken to her grandmother but due to circumstances, she is forced to live with her who happens to own a Taishou-inspired hot springs inn called the Kissuiso.
At the behest of her grandmother, she finds herself working at her grandmother’s inn as a way of paying for her living expenses.
Never did she think that her lifestyle would be anything like this. Initially felt discouraged and unhappy about her situation, Ohana decides to make the best of her situation and take it as an opportunity to better herself and make amends with her estranged co-workers hoping for a brighter and more prominent future for herself.
Ohana’s life has never been the same, a life filled with fun, mischief, romance and drama.

Characters:

Ohana Matsumae is the optimistic 16-year old protagonist of Hanasaku Iroha series. At the behest of her grandmother, she works at her grandmother’s hot springs inn to pay for her living expenses. Despite being strong-willed, she find herself relying on her best friend who so happens to have feelings for her.

Minko Tsurugi is the apprentice chef of Kissuiso Hot Springs Inn. Despite her cold demeanor, she does care for her co-workers and slowly warms up to Ohana.

Nako Oshimizu is the 16 year-old part-time maid and waitress of Kissuiso. She is the very first co-worker Ohana bonded with and has been inseparable since. She helps Ohana with her work at the inn. She is remarkably skilled in swimming.

Yuina Wakura is the 16-year old heiress of the Fukuya Inn, rival of Kissuiso. She goes to the same high school as Ohana and Minko and is seen oftentimes hanging out with each other.

Koichi Tanemura is Ohana’s best friend who later confesses his feelings to her. Ohana find herself relying on Koichi, offering his support when she feels down.

Update:

A manga sequel by P.A. Works was published in Bandai’s Web Comic Gekkin on July 2011 entitled “Hanasaku Iroha: Green Girls Graffiti”.
A feature-length animated film was released early of 2013 which was written by Mari Okada and directed by none other than Masahiro Ando.
The anime film hit the big theaters on March 2013 and was licensed by NIS America for an English version.
