General Information:

Tokyo Ghoul (Japanese: 東京喰種-トーキョーグール-) is a Japanese manga series written by newcomer Sui Ishida.
Tokyo Ghoul falls under themes of dark fantasy, action, supernatural, horror and even tragedy.
Tokyo Ghoul first came out in Viz Media’s Weekly Young Jump back in 2011.
As of September 2014, Viz Media has published 14 volumes of Tokyo Ghoul.
The anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul is directed by none other than the man behind Valvrave the Liberator and Gatchaman Crowds, Mr. Shuhei Morita.
Tokyo Ghoul is later licensed by Madman Entertainment, Funimation and Anime Limited.
Tokyo Ghoul premiered on July 2014 and briefly ended its first season on September of the same year.

A sequel to the anime entitled “Tokyo Ghoul √A” which was directed by Shuhei Morita.
Tokyo Ghoul √A is produced by Pierrot Studios and premiered on January 2015.

Plot:
"Tokyo Ghoul is a suspense horror/dark story set in modern-day Tokyo where it is haunted by mysterious creatures later known as “ghouls” who lives by hunting and devouring human flesh.
People and the society are gripped by fear of these horrifying ghouls whose identities are shrouded in mystery.
Ken Kaneki, a bookworm college student, meets a girl who like him is an avid reader, at a café he frequents.
Little did he know that his chance encounter with Rize Kamishiro, the girl she met, would actually change his life overnight.
He later finds out that Rize is actually a ghoul, a human-like creature that feeds on human flesh.
He barely survives the night and is rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

After recovering from his wounds, Kaneki later discover that he somehow underwent surgery where a part of Rize’s “special” organ was transplanted into him which transformed him into half-human, half-ghoul.
Just like them other ghouls, he too must consume human flesh to survive.
With no one else to turn to, he is taken in by the manager of a local coffee shop, the Anteiku, who just like him are also ghouls.
He is forced to face the reality that he is now a ghoul trying to survive in warped world interacting with the ghoul society and its conflicting factions, all the while striving to keep his identity secret from other humans especially from his best friend, Hideyoshi."

Characters:

Ken Kaneki is your average 18-year old college student who loves reading books. He is later transplanted with one of Rize’s organs after his organs were beyond recovery which transformed into a half-human and a half-ghoul. He struggles to keep his ghoul identity a secret, always fighting against his ghoul side while trying to continue to live like a normal human being.

Toka Kirishima is a 16-year old ghoul of the 20th ward. She works part-time as a waitress in Anteiku and attends high school while blending with the other humans. She later earns a reputation as the “Rabbit” after she attacked some investigators, killing one of them in the process. She herself is a skilled fighter in her own right although not as powerful as the other ghouls who prey on the weak humans and feed on their flesh.

Update:

Tokyo Ghoul is definitely one of the many shows around the “ghouls” concept including Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu, Zombie Loan, Kore wa Zombie Desuka, High School of the Dead and Shiki. You could also check out Terraformars, Shingeki no Kyojin, Deadman Wonderland, Akame ga Kill and Psycho Pass as they all share the same theme overall to Tokyo Ghoul.
