Sakura Taisen (サクラ大戦 Sakura Wars) is a Japanese media franchise created by Hiroi Ouji, and is developed and owned by Sega and licensed by Red Entertainment and Sega. The franchise centers on a series of dramatic fantasy and science-fantasy tactical role-playing adventure video games, which consist of tactical wargame and dating sim elements, but includes a motion picture, anime, a manga adaptation of the first game, a stage show with the seiyuu, drama CD's, food products and other merchandise. The series began in 1996 as an eponymous video game; the game was a success and spawned sequels. The video game series has since branched into other genres and platforms, such as portable games and games for mobile phones.
The fifth game was released in America in 2010 (five years after its Japanese release) under the title "Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love", and is only game the series that has been released outside of Japan.
The visuals of the characters were created by Fujishima Kousuke and designed by Matsubara Hidenori, while their scenarios were written by Akahori Satoru.

Similarly, the names of the troupe members are often patterned on the name of the troupe—flowers in the Hanagumi and the Groupe Fleur de Paris, celestial bodies in the Hoshigumi (the New York Kagekidan also uses celestial bodies). The naming patterns are likely the work of Akahori, who uses such throughout most of his creations (e.g., in Bakuretsu Hunters and Saber Marionette J).
