Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is a Japanese anime television series produced by Gainax, the very same anime studio that has brought us Corpse Princess, Gurenn Lagann and Medaka Box to name a few.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is an action, black comedy, and surreal humor anime series Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is written by the man known only by his pen name as Tagro and was quickly serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace back in August 2010.
As of to date, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt has 1 volume published which ended last June 2011.
Hiroyuki Imaishi, whose notable works include Gurenn Lagann and Kill la Kill, will be directing the anime adaptation of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt together with Gainax Studios.
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt started broadcasting last October 2010 and ended shortly on December 2010 of the same year with 13 insanely hilarious episodes.

PLOT:

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt revolves around the hilarious exploits of the Anarchy sisters, Panty and Stocking, angels who were kicked out of Heaven due their bad behavior.
As punishment, Panty and Stocking were banished into the fictional Daten City, a pun on the Japanese word “datenshi” which literally means fallen angels.
Daten City lies on the border between Heaven and Hell and apparently is home to numerous evil spirits later referred to as Ghosts.
In order to restoretheir former selves as angels, Panty & Stocking must collect enough Heaven Coins to buy their way back to Heaven.
Under the watchful eye of reverend Garterbelt, Panty & Stocking spend most of their nights blowing up ghosts into the seedy abyss using their powers, including their mind-blowing ability to transform their lingerie into weapons.
What seemed to easy at first glance turned into something complicated as the two keep getting sidetracked by their respective interests in men and sugar.



CHARACTERS:

Panty is the blonde-haired angel whose interests in men keep distracting her from completing her mission. Her first priority is fulfilling her personal goal of sleeping with 1,000 men before returning to Heaven. She is generally rude to everyone including her sister or to reverend Garterbelt. She enjoys the spotlight and prefers to live a celebrity life knowing it will attract more men in her life. Her power lies in her ability to transform her panties into a pistol called “Backlace”. She would also occasionally wield a second Backlace using Stocking’s panties or combining them into a more advanced powerful firearm like a submachine gun or a sniper rifle.


Stocking is the pink-haired goth angel who is insanely obsessed with sweets. Despite her voracious appetite for anything sweet, she doesn’t get fat allowing her to eat everything to her heart’s content. Although she may be mild-mannered and level-headed compared to her sister, she can be just as rude as Stocking when angry especially when someone steals her sweets. Her power lies in her ability to transform her stockings into a pair of katanas called “Stripe” and “Stripe II”.


Garterbelt is the acting reverend of Daten City and the one left in charge over Panty and Stocking. He serves as the Anarchy sister’s guardian. He relays the missions from Heaven to Panty and Stocking. Although not as open to his feelings or interests like the Anarchy sisters, Garterbelt does show a hidden interest in relatively young males, particularly Brief, and oftentimes engages in bondage activities.


UPDATE:

Despite its origins, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is done in a distrinct style resembling and paying homage to a number of North American cartoons to better fit the theme the show was going for.
In almost all episodes of the show did it showcase a variety of sexual themes.
The overall theme of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is “vulgar” and “indecent jokes” trying to go out of their way to becoming one of a kind in the anime industry.
It was later revealed that Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was actually inspired from a number of American adult cartoons like “Drawn Together” and “Dick Figures”.
