Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is a mecha anime television series, the 11th installment of the widely popular Gundam franchise.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is written by Yosuke Kuroda amd directed by none other than the man who has brought us Neon Genesis Evangelion, Seiji Mizushima.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is later licensed for a North American release by Beez Entertainment and Sunrise Studios.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 premiered on MBS and TBS last October 2007.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is scheduled for 50 action-packed episodes which ended on March 2009.

PLOT:

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is set in the year A.D. 2307 to a time where mankind continues to search for a new source of power as all fossil fuels on Earth is on the verge of depletion.
With the discovery and creation of solar power collectors, humanity has managed to survive extinction yet again.
The massive arrays of solar power collectors are supported by three orbital elevators, each one serving one of the power blocs on the planet: (1) Union, controlling most of North America, (2) Human Reform League, consisting of China, Russia and India, (3) and the AEU which is mainly situated in Europe.
Strife and war continues around the world as minor countries struggle for fuel and energy.
In all this chaos, a private military organization is formed called the “Celestial Beings”.
They are dedicated to eradicating war and uniting all of humankind against the same foe.
With the discovery of a special kind of alloy and advancements in technology, the Celestial Beings are able to create four super advanced machines called the “Gundams”.
Piloting these Gundams are four hand-picked pilots, a.ka. The Gundam Meisters, each with a unique skill respective to their own Gundam: Setsuna F. Seiei (Gundam Exia), Lockon Stratos (Gundam Dynames), Allelujah Haptism (Gundam Kyrios) and Tiera Verde (Gundam Virtue).
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 follows the Gundam Meisters as they turn the world upside down through the chaos, destruction and death in hopes of one day eradicating all war.

CHARACTERS:

Setsuna F. Seiei was once a child soldier of Kurdish descent who was later discovered by a Celestial Being for having the potential to become a great pilot. Setsuna's real name is Soran Ibrahim. He pilots Gundam Exia and specializes in melee combat.

Lockon Stratos is the acting leader of the Gundm Meisters being the eldest in the grou. He originally joined the Celestial Beings after his parents and younger sister were killed in a terrorist bombing. He is portrayed to be rather calm, collected, mild mannered and flamboyant. He pilots Gundam Dynames and specializes in long range combat.

Allelujah Haptism grew up as an orphan in the Human Reform League until he was recruited for the Super Soldier Project as an experimentalsubject. The aggravating trauma he experienced during the experiment gave brith to his alter ego, a more bloodthirsty and outright sadistic personality. He pilots Gundam Kyrios and specializes in high mobility.

Tieria Erde is the most enigmatic between the four, one with an unknown past and an unusually peculiar connection with the Innovators. He holds his missions with high regard, valuingit above the rest even to the point of risking his fellow pilot’s lives. He pilots the heavy-armored Gundam Virtue and specializes in heavy artillery and bombardment.

UPDATE:
Since its successful run way back in 2007, Sunrise Studios has worked on a second season of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 together with the same people who worked on the previous one including Seiji Mizushima.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 season 2 started broadcasting on October 2008.
The second season was scheduled with 26 fast-paced action-packed episodes which briefly ended March 2009 of the following year.
A movie sequel was also released entitled “A Wakening of the Trailblazer” which premiered on September 2010

When it comes to mecha anime shows, nothing beats the Gundam franchise so right off the bat, I would highly recommend are Mobile Suit SD Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, After War Gundam X, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Mobile Suit Gundam AGE and Gundam Build Fighters. Aside from the big hit Gundam series, you can also check out Macross Frontier, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Evangelion, and Broken Blade to name a few.
