Macross Frontier

Macross Frontier is a Japanese animated science fiction space drama written and illustrated by Aoki Hayato.
Macross Frontier falls under themes of mecha anime, space opera, romance, and military science fiction.
Macross Frontier is published in Kadokawa Shoten’s Shonen Ace since December 2007.
As of 2009, Macross Frontier has published 5 tankobon volumes. Statelight Studios with the help of Yasuhito Kikuchi and Shoji Kawamori developed the anime adaptation of Macross Frontier.
Macross Frontier is the third TV series of the Macross franchise serving as a direct sequel of Macross and Macross 7.
Macross Frontier debuted on MBS, TBS and Animax TV networks last April 2008 and ended as quickly as it started with 25 adrenaline-packed episodes.

PLOT:

Macross Frontier serves as the direct sequel to the original and first Macross series and Macross 7.
Macross Frontier is set in the year 2059, 47 years after the events of the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.
After being threatened with extinction at the hands of the alien invaders called the Zentradi, humanity undertook the task of protecting all life on Earth and guaranteeing their future by launching fleets of colony ships into space.
Aboard the Macross Frontier fleet, high school student Alto Saotome is performing stunts for a concert held by the wildly popular pop idol Sheryl when they are suddenly attacked by Zentradi forces.
Alto quickly finds himself in the ****pit of the Earth’s forces newest fighter model whilst trying to protect Renka Lee, a mysterious young girl she just met hours prior to the attack.
Due to his impeccable skills and talent, Alto’s performance in battle was noted and was formally invited to join the S.M.S. Skull Squadron private military company.
Hence begins the battle for Alto against the Zentradi forces as he protects his friends and the entire Macross Frontier fleet from the looming danger that awaits them all.

CHARACTERS:

Alto Saotome is a high school student at Mihoshi Academy Pilot Training Course. He is portrayed as somewhat aloof and standoffish despite being born into the well-known Kabuki Family. Despite being heir to the biggest companies on Earth, his persistent yearning for the skies has led to the thorny relationship between him and his father who later disowned him. He was invited into the S.M.S. Skull Squadron after his notable performance against the Zentradi forces. He pilots the VF-25 Messiah variable fighter.

Ranka Lee is later known as the “Super-Dimension Cinderella”. Her petite, lively and cheerful personality is actually just a façade over her post-traumatic stress syndrome after witnessing the destruction of the 117th Long Distance Research Fleet where her entire family perished in battle. She is actually one-quarter Zentradi and later became the adopted sister of Ozma Lee, the leader of the S.M.S. Skull Squadron.

Sheryl Nome is the wildly popular pop idol “Galactic Fairy” aboard the Macross Galaxy fleet. It was later revealed that she is actually a failed experimental subject called Fairy 9 and was later discarded by her creator, Grace O’Connor. She constantly tops music charts making her one of the more successful singers.

Macross Frontier is one of the more popular anime shows due to the fact that it hails its origin as being a production of the 25th anniversary of the wildly popular Macross franchise.
Macross Frontier has received well-endowed favor and widespread reception all over Japan, and even worldwide.
Macross Frontier served as the 3rd installment of the famous Macross franchise and served as a direct sequel to the first two series.
Several anime films were also released several years later after Macross Frontier entitled “Itsuwara no Utahime” and “Sayonara no Tsubasa” which debuted last November 2009 and February 2011 accordingly.
Macross F Dakishimete, Ginga no Hate Made is a manga series by Sorahiko Mizushima which were published in Kadokawa Shonen’s Comp Ace.
Sheryl-Kiss in the Galaxy is a 4-volume manga by Kariko Koyama in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Friend magazine.

Recommended titles that are quite similar in theme and content to Macross Frontier would include Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann, Voltes V, Daimos, Vandread, Rahxhepon, Eureka Seven all of which are anime shows with mecha themes against hordes of alien invaders. You could also try out the wildly famous Gundam franchise and the rest of the Macross franchise.
