Kamina is a headstrong young man from the underground village of Jeeha. He dreams of following his father when he was shown the surface world as a child. He convinces Simon (his soul-brother) to dig them out of Jeeha Village and onto the surface where their struggle for humanity begins. He is addressed as Aniki (bro) by Simon.
Kamina’s hot-blooded warrior spirit manifests itself in his powerful speeches which can make anybody fired up. With his burning passion, he becomes the first leader of Team Gurren. He also comes up with the idea of combining Simon’s Lagann and his newly captured Gunman, Gurren, making the famous Gurren Lagann. His death would plunge Simon into depression and his bravado would live on in the Dai-Gurren Brigade.
Kamina comes off as arrogant, hotheaded, noisy and reckless. He dreams of becoming someone great and calls himself the “Mighty Kamina”. Kamina makes it a point to keep going and never retreat. He fights to defend his loved ones protecting them until the end. When he is riled up, he exclaims his catchphrase “Who the hell do you think I am!?”
Yoko describes Kamina as “a man of unlimited stupidity” but during his first few battles against the Beastmen, Kamina was not only able to fight well but also strategized. His genius for using the landscape and acting unpredictably let Team Gurren capture the Dai-Gunzan making the Dai-Gurren Brigade. He never runs from a fight even to the point of death which is evident when he combines with Simon to make the Gurren Lagann for the last time against Thylmilph.
Kamina is a manly and tough man with defined muscles. He has short, wild, spikey, sky-blue hair and hides his long eyelashes and red eyes behind his signature triangle, red sunglasses. He has a tanned skin tone and has blue tattoos which start from his shoulders and run down his arm and onto his back where the shape resembles a flame. He is often seen with a smirk.
Kamina wears simple but flashy clothes that mirror his personality. He wears long, black pants with two red stripes at the bottom with a simple pair of brown sandals at his feet. His pants are held up by a white grommet belt that’s tied at the front and bandages wrapped around his abdomen and forearms. He also picks up his dead father’s red cape with orange flames at the bottom where the Dai-Gurren Brigade’s logo is later added. He also carries a katana.
