Plot:
Hunters! Those who travel in many places! Those who hunt for treasurer! Those who hunt magical beasts! Those who hunt men! But all this, is equal with one word: Danger. Yet danger cannot stop the boy named Gon, for he wants by all costs to become a Hunter. That way he can find his father who being a hunter, has disappeared long ago leaving Gon with his aunt Mito on Whale Island. He meets his father’s apprentice telling him that his father was alive, which Gon believed as being dead. He is an an accomplished Hunter and Gon believes if he could also follow his father's path, he will find his father and reunite with him. But becoming a hunter a license is required and the success rate to get one is very low. Yet Gon is determined. When he reaches the age of twelve, he leaves his home to enter the Hunter exam. There he befriends Leorio, whose dream is to become a doctor; Kurapika, a boy filled with hatred and revenge towards those who exterminated his clan; and Killua, an ex-assassin, who later Gon becomes best friends. With the help of each other they will pass any obstacle, even though sorrow, fear and death might be before them.

Notes:
Hunter x Hunter manga has been adapted in 1999 anime series with the same name, followed by an OVA series - Hunter x Hunter: Greed Island, and also some other ova series.
Another adaption started on 2011, based more on the manga: Hunter x Hunter (2011), followed by two movies: Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge & Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission
Currently the 2011 version of the anime is one of the most popular anime, ranked in the 4th place in My Anime List and 55th place in Anime News Network (even though ranked by fewer members).
The series is a work by Madhouse and is rated R – 17+.
If you are into Action, Adventure, Shounen anime, then this is a much-watch anime.
As for the manga it has been listed as a best-selling in North America by Diamond Comic Distributors.
A lot of other works are made based on HxH, including two musicals and ten video games (as of now) based on Hunter x Hunter.

Update:
HxH(2011) ended on September 24, 2014, since it was less than 30 manga chapters difference from the anime series. It was concluded with the meeting of Gon with his father at the top of the World Tree.
Hunter x Hunter has had a huge success, having sold more than 65.8 million copies of manga in Japan alone as of February 2013.
The Hunter x Hunter OST was composed by Toshihiko Sahashi.
