Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan (trans. Demon of the Fleeting Blossom: The Mysterious Tale of the Shinsengumi) was first developed by Idea Factory as a video game series for the Play Station 2 which was then later ported to several other platforms including the Play Station 3 and Play Station Portable (PSP).
Due to increased popularity, Studio Deen developed the anime adaptation of Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan with the help of Osamu Yamasaki as the director for the show.
Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan made its grand premiere on the big screen last April 2010 across a number of television networks like TV Kanagawa, Chiba TV and even Anime Network.
Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan had 12 enthralling episodes which ended on June 2010 of the same year.

PLOT:
Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan is set in Edo-period Japan to a time where samurais, swords and bushido are the way of living.
Yukimura Chizuru, daughter of a well-renowned doctor in Edo, moves back to Kyoto to search for his missing father.
On the way over, she gets attacked by a renegade group of madden men who are immediately struck down by members of the Shinsengumi, the local police force.
Chizuru is taken in for interrogation on what happened that night only to realize that she turns out to be the daughter of the doctor they have been searching for.
Turns out, the good doctor was actually the one who developed the “Water of Life”, an elixir of sorts that can turn any person who drinks it into invincible bloodthirsty killing machines called the “Rasetsu”.
Believing that Chizuru may very well be the fastest way of finding the good doctor, the Shinsengumi decide to keep her as an aide in their search.
It wasn’t long after the fated encounter between the Shinsengumi and the mysterious faction, the Bakumatsu Group would also lead her to the destined reunion of her missing father.
She later unravels the mysteries surrounding Kyoto whether it’s the Water of Life, the sentient beings called Oni or the true nature of the man she once called her father.

UPDATE:
Since then, several sequels have been made by the same people who worked on Hakuoki Shinsengumi Kitan. Last October 2010, “Hakuoki Hekketsuroki” premiered on several television networks.
Season 2 was scheduled for 10 gripping episodes which quickly ended on December 2010 of the same year.
“Hakuoki Reimeiroku”, the third installment of the Hakuoki series made its big debut on July 2012. It ended on September 2012 with 12 insanely thrilling episodes.
Several OVAs have also been released here and there as well as a couple of animated films.
