General Information:

Gakuen MokuShiroku (Japanese: 学園黙示録) or more widely known for its English name, Highschool of the Dead, is a Japanese post-apocalyptic manga series by Daisuke Sato.
Highschool of the Dead has themes of horror, drama, supernatural (hint: zombies) and is illustrated by Shoji Sato.
Highschool of the Dead was originally published by Kadokawa Shoten in the Monthly Dragon Age for the first five volumes.
It was later picked up by Fujimi Shobo which continued to publish two more and was put on hiatus on May 2013.


The anime adaptation of Highschool of the Dead was directed by Tetsuro Araki, more known as the man behind Black Lagoon, Death Note, Kurozuka and Guilty Crown.
Highschool of the Dead was produced by Mitsutoshi Ogura together with Madhouse Studios.
Highschool of the Dead is licensed by Madman Entertainment, Sentai Filmworks and Manga Entertainment which broadcasted on the English network Neon Alley and Anime Network.
Highschool of the Dead made its big debut on AT-X and TV Tokyo on July 2010 and ended on September of the same year with 12 horrifyingly-good episodes.

Plot:

Highschool of the Dead is set in modern-day Japan where the world is struck by a deadly pandemic.
A deadly infection breaks out (later known as the Outbreak) where alarming death rates and increased attacks are caused by what would seem to be the living dead, that’s right, zombies.


The story follows Takashi Komuro, your seemingly average teenage boy, along with several other high school students, band together to escape Fujimi High School shortly after it was attacked by a renegade group of zombies.
As the group tries to survive the zombie apocalypse, they are forced to face the harsh reality, societal collapse and possibly, the decay of even their own moral codes.
The group sets out into the unknown in this post-apocalyptic world, trying to survive and figure out what really happened to the world.


Characters:

Takashi Komuro is the 17-year old student of Fujimi High School who just like the others, is one of the survivors of the initial Outbreak. He was later elected leader by the rest of the survivors.


Rei Miyamoto is Takashi’s classmate and childhood friend. Rei is a member of the school’s Soujutsu Club and her weapons are mainly spears. She uses a sharpened broomstick to fend off the zombies along with Takashi.


Saeko Busujima is the third-year president of the school’s Kendo Club. Saeko initially used a bokken (a wooden sword) but changes to a katana which they found at a Shinto temple.


Saya Takagi is the wealthy daughter of a nationalist politician and a second-year student of Fujimi High. She earlier used an electric drill on a zombie and later a rifle when they were stuck in a humvee.


Kohta Hirano is the 16-year old guns enthusiast and second year student of Fujimi High. He is the wimpy overweight guy in the group who has had training with a former Delta Force member for a month. He uses a variety of weapons ranging from an improvised nail gun, an AR-10, and later a Suppressed MP5 SFK.


Shizuka Marikawa is the Fujimi High School’s nurse who escaped together with Takashi and the gang when it got overrun by zombies. Although quite the ditsy personality, she does become reliable when the need groups her like when she drove the school bus, and later the humvee.

Update:

Madhouse Studios has worked on an OVA entitled “Drifters of the Dead” together with Director Tetsuro Araki and Producer Mitsutoshi Ogura.
The 18-minute episode was aired on April 2011.
It has received both positive and negative reviews from both sides of the panel.


In the post-apocalyptic scenario like Highschool of the Dead, you could also check out similar titles like Shiki, Zombie Loan, Hellsing, Gantz, Elfen Lied, Deadman Wonderland and Kore wa Zombie desu ka are all shows that share the same theme and concept.
