General Information:

Darkstalkers (Japanese: ヴァンパイア ) first came out as a series of 2D fighting games developed by Capcom.
Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge is a four-episode OVA anime series by Madhouse Studios and DR Movie.
Darkstalkers is directed by Masashi Ikeda together with several key animation directors including Hideki Takayama, Hiroyuki Tanaka, Satoshi Tasaki and Takafumi Hoshikawa.
Darkstalkers was licensed by Madman Entertainment and Viz Media. Darkstalkers premiered on March 1997 and ended on March of the following year.

Darkstalkers is set in a different world, to a different time, where all the old legends of vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and all manner of things that go bump in the night are all REAL.
In this dark and brooding world populated by humans, powerful beings known as the Darkstalkers rule the land and the hearts of men who in turn cower over their mere presence.
The Darkstalkers are in constant strife and conflict with one another in contests of strength and sheer will in hopes of attaining their own personal goals.


In the midst of war between two of the most powerful Darkstalkers: Demitri Maximoff and Morrigan Aensland over control of the entire Demon World, meanwhile an ancient race of Aztec robots decided to destroy the world after determining humanity is no longer worth saving.
Pyron, an alien invader joins in the fray determined on world domination.
Now it falls on the Darkstalkers to put their differences aside and become unwilling allies against this imminent threat before all hope is lost.
Darkstalkers is indeed a one-of-a-kind thrill ride that takes these traditional monsters to a level that is beyond even your wildest dreams.


Characters:

Demitri Maximoff is the mighty Romanian vampire lord who shares a bitter rivalry with Morrigan Aensland over control of the Demon World. He was later banished to the human world after facing defeat at the hands of the Aensland family and has secluded himself inside a coffin for fifty long years, only emerging on a full moon to feed.


Morrigan Aensland is the all-powerful succubus princess of the Demon World. She was the adopted daughter of the late king Belial of the Aensland household. When she was found, her power was so great that Belial had to separate it into three different parts: a third to himself which will return to Morrigan at his deathbed and another third to a pocket dimension which eventually came into being on its own and later calling herself as Lilith.


Pyron is the imposing alien overlord who is determined to consume the world in a quest for power. He tried to consume Earth before but was stopped by the Darkstalkers. He now returns to Earth in an effort to finish what he started.

Update:

Prior to the OVA release of Darkstalkers, an American children’s animated series was produced by Graz Entertainment under the same name.
The cartoon is loosely based on the Capcom 2D fighting game Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors.
The show ran for only one season with 13 episodes.


Darkstalkers is one of the many anime shows which originated from 2D fighting games like Virtua Fighter, King of Fighters, Konjiki no Gash Bell, Jojo’s Bizzare, Fatal Fury and the widely popular Street Fighter series. I would also recommend Hellsing, Blood the Last Vampire, Shamanic Princess and Fist of the North Star all of which share a thing or two with Darkstalkers.
