Two spatial anomalies known has “Heaven’s Gate” and “Hell’s Gate” have opened up in South America and Tokyo. These gates have altered the sky, land, and have produced people who possess special abilities (Contractors). Each contractor has a fake star that reacts to their special powers and must “pay a price” when they use their power (they do so by enacting a strange ritualistic impulse – much like OCD). They are also often trained and used as assassins.
Hei is a psychic agent or contractor that works with Yin (his blin associate) works with an agency that is bent on unlocking the mysteries behind the gate in Tokyo (Hell’s Gate). What does it mean and what can it do?

The four OVAs (Darker than Black: Gaiden) is set in between seasons one and two. The manga was illustrated by Nokiya and was serialized in Monthly Asuka.
