General Information:

DOGS: Bullets & Carnage (Japanese: 狗-DOGS) is a Japanese action, biopunk and drama manga series by Shirow Miwa, the man behind Devil May Cry and Black Mind.
Miwa first published “Dogs: Stray Dogs Howling in the Dark” in Shueisha’s Ultra Jump magazine back in 2001.
Its sequel, DOGS: Bullets & Carnage, started serialization on 2005 and published in Ultra Jump magazine.
DOGS: Bullets & Carnage is still an ongoing manga series with 9 published volumes under its name.
Due to popular demand, the manga series have later been adapted into a two-volume OVA (original video animation) series directed by Tatsuya Abe and Producer Goro Taniguchi.
DOGS: Bullets & Carnage was produced by David Production Studios which premiered on May 2009. DOGS: Bullets & Carnage ended with 4 OVA episodes.

Plot:

DOGS: Bullets & Carnage is set in a dystopic European city which extends far underground sometime in the distant future to a time where violence, crime, genetic manipulation, human experimentation and scientific brutalities are quite.
The story follows four unrelated antihero protagonists who coincidentally find themselves searching for a way down to the “Below” in search of answers to their respective and individual pasts.
Mihai is the retired assassin who now makes a living as a restaurant owner, Haine is the genetically altered human being with dog-like attributes, Badou is the obsessive chain smoker who becames deranged when denied his cigarettes, and Naoto is the sword-wielding orphan who suffers from full-blown amnesia.
Together, they soon discover that their pasts may turn out to be connected with one another to the dark secret of the underground and the sinister organization that controls it.


Characters:

Mihai Mihaeroff is a former veteran assassin who now earns a living as a restaurant owner. In his glory days, Mihai used to work for a local gang boss who later mentored his son. Generally level-headed, calm and most experienced, Nihai oftentimes find himself leading the group.


Heine Rammsteiner is an albino gunman who was genetically altered with remnants of a “Kerberos Spine” which gave him dog-like attributes. He was created by the Underground’s research facility as the so-called “ultimate human weapon”.


Badou Nails is the compulsive chain-smoker who works as an Underground information broker. He tends to moody dependent on the availability of cigarettes and the nicotine levels he has in his blood. He can go from extremely elated to downright murderous in a matter of seconds.


Naoto Fuyumine is the sword-wielding girl with a large X-mark on her chest. She was traumatized as a kid when her parents go brutally murdered in front of her eyes. She is unable to remember anything from that day and has been on the search for who really killed her parents.


Update:

Carlo Santos of the Anime News Network has this to say about DOGS: Bullets & Carnage, “it is gunplay to the level of art”. Overall, DOGS: Bullets & Carnage has been warmly received by the people with mixed reviews both negative and positive.
