Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai or Haganai for short is a Japanese harem and comedy light novel series written by Yomi Hirasaka.
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai was illustrated by Buriki and published by Media Factory.
Since August 2009, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai has published 10 volumes as of today.
Long after, Yomi Hirasaka started the manga adaptation of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai and was published in Media Factory’s Monthly Comic Alice since March 2010.
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai has 11 volumes published since then.
A spin off manga series was also published by Misaki Haruakawa entitled “Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai+” and published in the Jump Square.
Hisashi Saito directed the anime adaptation of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai which premiered on TBS, MBS and Funimation Channel last October 2011.
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai had 13 hilarious episodes.



PLOT:

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai follows Kodaka Hasegawa, a transfer student at St. Chronica’s Academy.
Kodaka finds it difficult to find friends at his new school due to his mixed brown-blonde hair which he inherited from his deceased mother who happens to be of English decent.
One day, he runs into the bad-tempered and solitary classmate, Yozora Mikazuki, while she converses with her imaginary friend Tomo.
Realizing that they both lack social lives or the skills to have one, they decided that the best way to improve their rather solitary lives is to form a club that caters to their specific needs.
And that is how the Rinjin-bu (trans. Neighbors) Club came to be, an after-school club designed specifically for people who doesn’t have any friends like themselves.
It wasn’t long after that people started joining their club like Sena Kashiwazaki, the attractive yet arrogant idol; Yukimura Kusunoki, the effeminate underclassman who has always admired Kodaka; Rika Shiguma, the perverted genius scientist; and last but not least is Kodaka’s sister who thinks that she is a vampire.
Together, they try to learn the art of friendship through cooking together, playing games, and other group activities. But the big question remains: “will this ragtag group of relationship-challenged misfits really be able to get along with each other?”



CHARACTERS:

Kodaka Hasegawa is recent transfer student at St. Chronica’s Academy. Despite his rather gentle and balanced personality, his unusually spotty-blonde hair from which he inherited from his English mother makes it hard for him to make new friends. Due to his appearance, most of his classmates are led into assuming that he is quite the violent and abusive delinquent. Kodaka has been accustomed to conflicts due to this and he has learned how to defend himself.


Yozora Mikazuki is the bad-tempered but equally solitary classmate of Kodaka who is oftentimes seen talking to her imaginary friend, Tomo. Her very abrasive personality makes her verbally abusive towards people in general. She oftentimes finds herself arguing with Sena over who is smarter between the two. It wasn’t till later did she realize that she and Kodaka were actually childhood friends back in the day.


Sena Kashiwazaki is the daughter of the school’s chairman who is oftentimes described as “perfect in every way except her personality”. Both attractive and academically successful, her arrogance gets the better of her and she finds herself in a situation without female friends and treating men around her as slaves. She is particularly fond of playing bishounen video games as it gives her the opportunity to at least make a few female friends albeit virtual ones. She eventually develops feelings for Kodaka.


Kobato Hasegawa is a junior high student at St. Chronica’s Academy who also happens to be Kodaka’s younger sister. She acts clingy towards her brother and is jealous whenever he doesn’t give her his undivided attention. She is fond of playing the role of a vampire wearing gothic clothes and red contact lens, drinking tomato juice as if it were blood and speaking in an affected formal English language.


Yukimura Kusunoki is the effeminate schoolmate of Kodaka’s who was first introduced as Kodaka’s stalker. With his gullible personality paired with his low self esteem, Yukimura strongly believes to be a masculine outlaw who lives life the way he wanted. He later pledges to Kodaka to become his underling in hopes of learning to become manlier as he is. It wasn’t till later did everyone realize that Yukimura is actually a girl, much to the surprise of everyone else especially Yukimura herself.


Rika Shiguma is the first year genius scientist at St. Chronica’s Academy. She joins the Rinjin-bu CLib after Kodaka rescues her from one of her experiments that has gone disastrously wrong. Despite her rather serious predisposition, she is actually the most sexually forward club member wherein she easily can turn innocent remarks into something more dark and perverted. Talking about weird, she enjoys reading doujinshi manga and is especially aroused by stories that involve intercourse between mecha.



UPDATE:

After the successful premiere of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, it gave birth to a number of light novel spin offs and several games on a number of gaming platforms.
AIC Build announced in its recent interview that they were working on a second season of Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai entitled “Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT” which was scheduled to premiere last January 2013.
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT ended last March 2013 with 12 episodes.
A live action film was also made under the capable direction of Takuro Oikawa which debuted last February 2014.
