Angel Beats! is a manga, four-panel comic strip, a mini-novel and an anime series. The anime serves as the plot source whereas the mini-novel is supplement material. The anime was written by Jun Maeda, character designed by Na-Ga and Maeda, directed by Sieji Kishi and produced by Aniplex and P.A. Works. It aired starting April 3, 2010 and ended on June 26, 20100. The manga adaptation was illustrated by Haruka Komowata and then Yuriko Asami and published in Dengki G’s Magazing. Short stories were also illustrated by GotoP and created by Maeda in Degeki G’s Magazine starting in November 2009 and ending May 2010. A visual novel was then produced by Key and will be released in 2014 for Windows.

Angel Beats! Plot:

Young people who die having attachments or regrets before passing on have their souls sent to a high school which serve as Limbo for them. They become students who must learn to let go of their worldly attachments to move on. In this afterlife, students can still taste food and even get hurt. People who get hurt simply pass out and then awaken like nothing happened.

Angel Beats! follows one of these students, Otonashi, who ends up in this odd afterlife not remembering anything from his previous life. He meets a girl, Yuri, who is out to snipe another girl. She invite Otonashi to join the Afterlife Battlefront (Shinda Sekai Sensen or SSS), whose goal is to rebel against God for the lives the SSS members. When performing missions, they set up a big event where the band “Girls Dead Monster” performs to distract the NPCs. NPCs are “normal” students and teachers who populate the High School. The enemy of the SSS is Tenshi, an Angel who possesses supernatural powers and constantly attempts to stop the SSS.

Angel Beats! Characters:

Otonashi Yuzuru – Otanashi is a red haired boy who forgot everything about his life prior to being sent to the afterlife. He later makes friends with the SSS’s enemy, Tenshi (Angel). With the help of another student who is a hypnotist, his memories about his life are recovered.

Nakamura Yuri – Yuri is the leader of the SSS and the mastermind behind all of the SSS missions. She was the one who invited Otanashi into the SSS and briefed him that Tenshi and God are their enemy.

Tachibana Kanade – Tachibana Kanade or Tenshi (Angel) is the enemy of the SSS and the student council president of the high school. She fights the SSS because she considers their missions to be disruptive of school activity. The SSS call her Tenshi (Angel) because they did not know her real name and Yuri forgot it. Otanashi later found out during a mission to remove Tenshi (Angel) from her position as student council president.

Hinata Hideki – Hinata is the close friend of Otanashi. He is the co-founder of the SSS and prefers to call Yuri as Yurippe as his mother had the same name. He harbors romantic feelings for Yuri.
