The real name of that Dragon-creature, is Nien, I think.
In mythology, it, along with many other embodiments of evil spirits terrorized Chinese towns and provinces. It was discovered, that the beasts were afraid of the color Crimson red as some of the creatures were frightened by a young girl in a town dressed in red clothes. The color Red becomes the symbol of China which represents luck, repelling misfortune (evil demons) and happiness. -

Actually, it's "Nian". And you forgot that this monster is afraid of the sound of banging pots and pans, loud sounds that is. That's why they set up fireworks and beat the drums to scare it away.
