Natsume Yuujinchou is a manga created and illustrated by Yuki Midorikawa. It was published in LaLaDX in 2005 then was moved to LaLa in 2008 and is still on going. The first anime adaptation was produced by Brian’s Base, aired on TV Tokyo starting July 7, 2008 and ending September 29, 2008. The second season of the anime season started on January 5, 2009 and ended on March 30, 2009.

Natsume Yuujinchou Plot:

Takashi Natsume has inherited the ability to see spirits from his Reiko, his grandmother. Reiko has passed away and passed down her “Book of Friends” to Natsume. The book contains the names of the spirits Reiko forced into serving her. Many spirits are after the Book of Friends as it can either give them their name back or give them control over other spirits. The spirits are so persistent that they would haunt Natsume even when he was a child. When Natsume grew older, he spends his time returning the names of the spirits who seek help from him. Even now, there are powerful and evil spirits who seek to kill the holder of the Book of Friends. Madara (or Nyanko-sensei) is a powerful spirit who acts as Natsume’s bodyguard but on the condition that he can gets the Book of Friends if Natsume dies. As they go through many adventures, Madara becomes attacked to Natsume.

Natsume Yuujinchou Characters:

Takashi Natsume – Natsume is a teenage boy who inherited the power to communicate with the spirits from his grandmother, Reiko. When Reiko passed away, he inherits the Book of Friends which contain the names of the spirits Reiko forced or tricked into serving her. Instead of continuing his grandmother’s legacy, he spends his time returning the names of the spirits.

Nyanko-sensei – Nyanko-sensei or Madara is a powerful spirit who was sealed away in a shrine until Natsume unintentionally released him. He takes the image of a cat that looks almost exactly like a lucky cat. In this form, ordinary people can see him. He protects Natsume and gives him advice about spirits but in return, Madara gets the Book of Friends when Natsume dies.

Reiko Natsume – Reiko is the grandmother of Takashi Natsume. When she was younger, she was considered a freak by humans but get along with spirits. Reiko is considered to be incredibly powerful and, just for fun, would challenge other spirits. If they lost, they had to give their name away to Reiko. Reiko then gathered those names into a Book of Friends. When she passed, Takashi Natsume inherited the book.
