K-ON! is a manga created and illustrated by Kakifly. It was published in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara on May, 2007 as well as in Manga Time Kirara Carat on October 2008 and ended on August, 2012. The anime adaptation was produced by Kyoto Animation in 2009 and ended on 2010.
K-ON! focuses on a the everyday lives of group of five high school girls who are members of the Light Music Club and their journey as a band. Ritsu Tainaka saves the Light Music Club from disbanding by recruiting a makeshift group with Yui Hirasawa, Mio Akiyama and Tsumugi Kotobuk. Despite the success in saving the Light Music Club, they hastily put together a band to do club activities and discover that Yui knows nothing about playing guitar. A fifth member, Azusa Nakano, joins the Light Music Club hoping for a serious club but is quickly disappointed by their laziness and lack of motivation. During their lives in school, they share each other’s personal and band problems as well as finding even more ways to waste time. If not going out, they’re mostly in the club room drinking tea and eating cakes and cookies. When they finally land a gig, they come up with the band name Afterschool Tea Time (Ho-Kago Tea Time in Japanese).
Hirasawa Yui – Yui is one of the protagonists of K-ON! and is the self-proclaimed lead guitarist of Afternoon Tea Time. She mains as one of the main vocalists and is actually the rhythm guitarist of the band. She joins the Light Music Club mistaking it as “easy music” such as whistling. When she joins the club, she dives in as the guitarist even if she has never touched a guitar in her life. She slowly learns from Mio, her sister, Ui and Azusa.
Akiyama Mio – Mio is one of the protagonists of K-ON!, the actual leader of the Light Music Club and the bassist and vocalist of Afterschool Tea Time. She composes most of the songs for the band and acts as the organizer for most of the club’s activities.
Tainaka Ritsu – Ritsu holds the title of the Light Music Club’s president even though she doesn’t act the role. She saved the Light Music Club from disbanding and is best friends with Mio. She’s also the drummer for Afterschool Tea Time.
Kotobuki Tsumugi – Mugi is the keyboardist of Afternoon Tea Time and is the source of the Light Music Club’s tea and sweets. She’s the daughter of a rich entrepreneur and owns several properties in Japan.
Nakano Azusa – Azunyan is the last member of the Light Music Club and the lead guitarist of Afternoon Tea Time playing the difficult parts for Yui. She’s the daughter of two jazz artists and was also asked to join the jazz club before joining the Light Music Club. She’s incredibly skilled on the guitar but puts herself down as a musician and as a person.
