Hellsing (Japanese: ヘルシング) is a widely popular Japanese manga series both written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano.
Hellsing first came out in Young King Ours magazine back in 1997. Hellsing is a combination of action, biopunk, drama, horror, science, supernatural and fantasy.
As of 2009, Shonen Gahosha has published ten (10) volumes of Hellsing. Umanosuke Iida, the man behind exceptional works like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky and Vandread, directed the anime adaptation of Hellsing together with Chiaki Konaka who wrote the script for the show.
Hellsing is a collaborated work between Studio Gonzo and Digimation Studios which premiered on late 2001.
Hellsing ended with 13 bone-chilling action-packed episodes on January 2002.
Hellsing is the name of the legendary group, the Royal Order of Prostestant Knights led by the infamous Abraham Van Helsing against the forces of undead and other supernatural evils that threaten the Queen and the country.
This religious organization is now currently under the leadership of Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, a legitimate successor of the royal Hellsing family.
By her side are the Hellsing family butler, Walter C. Dornez (formerly known as the Hellsing trashman) and Alucard, an original vampire.
One hundred years ago, Alucard swore loyalty to the Hellsing family after being defeated by Van Helsing back in the day.
He remains loyal to the family to this day offering his services as one of the most powerful vampire in history.
Joining them is the former police officer, Seras Victoria, turned vampire. Together, they face remnants of a neo-Nazi group, the Millenium, determined on reviving the Third Reich by amassing a battalion of a new breed of vampires.
The Hellsing Organization, Millenium and the Vatican Section XIII Iscariot clash in a pre-apocalyptic three-sided war in London.
Alucard is the main protagonist of the Hellsing series. It has been implied numerous times that he may very well be the most powerful entity in the entirety of the series being an original vampire who faced Van Helsing back in his prime years. He can be egotistical at times, taunting and even belittling his opponents. He tends to break his opponents with horrifying ferocity and often-extreme cruelty where he only kills his opponents after he has been totally disabled and humiliated. He oftentimes finds himself blindsided by his arrogance and taken in by surprise attacks. Having led a lonely immortal life, he has been searching for a worthy opponent, a human being as powerful as Abraham Van Helsing to whom he faced defeat. Alucard is the closest thing to an immortal. His powers have been restrained by a series of seals placed upon by the late Van Helsing.
Seras Victoria is the former police officer turned vampire. She shares an unbreakable master-servant relationship with Alucard, the vampire who turned her when on the verge of death. Brave and strong-willed, she oftentimes rejects her master’s orders when it crosses with her own personal beliefs. Trying her hardest not to feed on human blood, which vampires rely on for strength, she compensates her lack of strength by using a variety of firearms. She carries a breech loader type of cannon which uses a variety of shells depending on the situation.
Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is the 22-year old leader of the royal order of Protestant knight more known as the Hellsing Organization. Normally a calm and collected individual, she is oftentimes prone to fits of anger. She takes pride in her job and takes her duties with high regard protecting the country and the Anglican Church from all types of evil, especially the undead vampires.
Walter C. Dornez is the Hellsing family retainer. He is an extremely skilled fighter back in the day which he earned the nickname as the “Angel of Death”. Despite being in his 70’s, Walter is still able to fight hordes of undead. He uses high-velocity monomolecular wires that can cut through anything even buildings.
A manga spin-off series of Hellsing entitled “The Dawn” by Kouta Hirano was published in 2001.
A 10-episode OVA (original video animation) was produced by Satelight and Madhouse Studios entitled “Hellsing Ultimate”.
Hellsing Ultimate is directed by Tomokazu Tokoro, Hiroyuki Tanaka, Yasuhiro Matsumura and Kenichi Suzuki.
