Dangan ronpa or Danganronpa: Academy of Hope and High School Students of Despair (Danganronpa Kibō no Gakuen to Zetsubō no Kōkōsei (Japanese: ダンガンロンパ 希望の学園と絶望の高校)) is a an anime of 13 episodes directed by Seiji Kishi that aired from July 4, 2013 to September 26, 2013. It was released on DVD & Blu-Ray on August 28. Lerche is the studio that decided to adapt the novels and video games into an anime, using the same voice actors as in the games. Before it became an anime, it first was a murder mystery visual novel developed by Spike Chunsoft for PSP, iOS, and Android. Komatsuzaki Rui did the illustrations while Kodaka Kazutaka wrote the script and story of the game. Classified mature, this game has three sequels for now and has been adapted into a light novel and an anime. The first game came on on November 2010.
The art style resembles Naruto, Higurashi ni naku koro ni, and Ouran High School Host School, with the exception that blood is pink for a more dramatic and ironical effect of all this mayhem and cruelty. As for the anime release, an illustration contest had been held: in order to commemorate the adaptation of the PSP game into an anime, the participants had to draw one or more character(s) from the first game and the winners were picked by the official staff. The overall winner got autographs from Makoto Uezu, Rui Komatsuzaki, Seiji Kishi, and Kazuiaki Morita and official merchandise. Moreover, all of the winners had their work printed in the pixiv x Dangan ronpa The Animation art book.
"A group of 15 talented and highly successful high school students are accepted into a very special and high class academy. Makoto Naegi is part of those 15, but not out of talent, simply because he’s the “lucky student” who got transferred. Every year this academy welcomes an average student to prove their good faith – which is a cover and an additional variable to the game orchestrated by the school’s headmaster. However, his luck and new academy take a turn for the worst when he learns that in order to graduate, they have to kill someone and not be caught – to commit the perfect murder, actually. The school’s headmaster is a bi-colored bear named Monokuma, who traps them all inside the building using armoured doors, powerful locking systems, and threats hanging over their family and loved ones.
Only one of them can survive to win the game."
This series resembles Higurashi no naku koro ni as teenagers in a weird town commit murders and the main character must find out whom it is before he gets killed. As for the ‘’lucky student’’ part and school life, it bears resemblances with Ouran High School Host Club where Haruhi Fujioka, after much effort and perfect grades, is accepted into this prestigious school for rich people. Moreover, if you enjoy bloody anime and characters with seemingly split personalities like Monokuma, Elfen Lied is another one for you to check out.
