Just my opinion though, of course! I'm sure there are plenty who would disagree...

o_o They do....either way, both couples are awesome. ^^

I don't think Namie is really like Hungary o__O at all..
-
Dec 01, 2011
Izaya and Prussia, MOST DEFINATELY.
Namie and Hungary, MOST DEFINATELY NOT.
Namie is a total bitch (in my opinion); Hungary is a cute fujoshi. Technically, Hungary is more like Erika than Namie. -
Hmm, I respectfully beg to differ.
Anyway, that's a cute PruHun picture! <3 -
Izaya n Prussia is similar.. they r both awesome~<3
where did u get pruhun pic?! >w<
n i agree that Namie is total bitch =w= -

Those of you that don't think Namie is like Hungary, think about it... Think about Namie's relationship with her brother.
Now, think of Hungary's relationship with Austria.
Both = incredibly protective/obsessive.
Next, think of how she is with Izaya. Now think Hungary with Prussia... The only difference between the two is that Namie isn't physically violent. :P (*As far as I know. I've only seen the anime...)
EDIT: As for the pictures themselves, I found them both on here! ^_^ -
Dec 01, 2011
I disagree, Hungary is not really possesive, you see her protecting Austria only during the time they were married, on other ocassions they hang out but there's no fight to check whether she still protects him. And she admires Austria a lot. Namie's way of thinking has a complete different basis. In my opinion anyway...
Same with the violance, Hungary hits Prussia almost every time they meet, yet he's her childhood friend, she respects him and even thought he was cool once. Namie's does neither of those in terms Izaya. Again my opinion only...
I can see why people tend to think Prussia = Izaya and I guess Namie's the closest you get with a girl/woman(because otherwise Hungary = Shizuo definitely).
but the pictures themselves are cute, I agree -
Dec 02, 2011
I don't know, she's definitely not as possessive as Namie, but Hungary doesn't seem to like other countries going near Austria...
I do agree that when you compare them singularly they're not that similar, though. I guess I meant the way Namie interacts with Izaya, and Hungary with Prussia more than anything. But yeah. Hungary's wayyy nicer than Namie. =__= Haha. -

O.o You're right....
-
I agree with Gladimir2728
-
am I the only one who doesn't see ANY notable similarities between Izaya and Gil except for them being hated by most of the cast and being seemingly oblivious to it?
-
Dec 04, 2011
@mademoiselle_massacreuse
If you think about it, they have more similarities than that. They are both obnoxious, self-centered (Izaya kinda 50/50 on that, since he rants and raves about loving humans), they both have siblings who aren't very fond of them, etc. etc. -
Dec 04, 2011
^ And they both tend to prey on/manipulate those weaker than them...

Gilbert and Izaya >= AWESOME~!
Namie and Elizibeta >= KAWAII~! -
It's not clever to compare light-hearted anime to the more serious one, where everyone is plain crazy. Just sayin'.
Anyways. Gilbert is more serious than Izaya, while with Hungary and Namie it's the other way around. Both pairings' chemistry works the same way though. But due to the not-so-good adaptation of the Durarara's novels, it's hard to say this. Izaya's and Namie's relationship is a little different in the novels itself. It's more like that cliche love-hate relationship, they do hate each other but still cooperate and hell they do that just fine. And they DO respect each other in one way or another, mind you. You can't notice this in the Anime because they've never showed it the way they should have. I am sure people who read novels can understand me perfectly. -

See, I've seen a LOT of people say that about Hetalia (not to compare it with something serious), and whilst I would agree if we were comparing, say... Ouran HSHC to Death Note, but I think Hetalia is probably the one exception to the rule, considering the amount of fanon this fandom contains. Fanfiction about Hetalia is literally split 50/50
Oh, wow... I don't think I've ever seen 'Prussia' and 'serious' in the same sentence before! XD I don't think Prussia is more serious! Unless Izaya is portrayed a lot more playfully in the novels...? I mean, the only time I've ever seen Gilbert be serious is when he's trying to seize Austria's vital regions... hurr. But no seriously, most of the time he's just trolling Hungary (gee, doesn't THAT sound familiar? :P) or some other poor nation. Normally Austria. Similarly with Izaya, he doesn't take much seriously but I'd say he was pretty serious & determined about waking Celty's head...
I'm 100% with you on the Hungary/Namie comparison, though. :P In fact, I don't think I've EVER seen Hungary serious... just mad. -
Dec 09, 2011
True Gilbert and Izaya are quite alike but Namie doesn't exactly have the cheery and happy personality as Hungary. I don't really think their interactions are the same either. I think Hungary and Prussia's is more equal to Izaya and Shizuo's than Izaya and Namie's.
If anything else, Belarus could be the closest thing you can compare to Namie. The incest, having a creepy brother, cold and uncaring on the outside. Except Namie's less aggressive and more of a deadpan snarker than Belarus. -
my, things have been proceeding while I was gone
.. guess that's what Hetalia does to the comments
the more I think about it the less I see it actually.
their younger siblings may not hold both of them in too high regards but Ludwig doesn't go as far as sayig he'd push his brother in front of a bus and they have a completely different, way less distant relationship in general.
Gil may be an arrogant, annoying bastard and well aware of it but I don't remember him being a troll in the way or to the extent Izaya is or ever ~*~manipulating~*~ others in doing something for him in canon.( not too familiar with the webcomics, tho)he's actually pretty straightforward.
well .. I could list all those other things I disagree with but the thing is not only is my post turning out way too long once again but I didn't even intend to go this deep and detailed into this.
It's just when I imagine them meeting in the same setting it all comes down to Prussia being an ambitious, loud, comedically narcissistic but secretly self-consious babbu you can actually be quite good friends with whilst Izaya's behaviour'd quite well adjusted at first glance jet damn irritating and unsettling with his random deep cutting remarks. I mean the man's got some issues; Gil's just a boisterous jerk. and yeah .. the deeper I get into it with all those little habits, self-perception as already mentioned and all your favorite Freudian**** the more they differ. IMHO 'course
Kinda agree with the way the couples( not characters) work being similar, tho .. with their mutual understanding and teasing
but who ever said we're trying to be ~*clever~*~ here( or that DRRR!!'s a serious anime for that matter) all debates of that sort are pretty much pointless as all fiction's a matter of interpretation( and neither Narita not Himaruya care as long as they get their checks). I was just confused at SO MANY people linking those 2 and drawing fanart and all when I find their basic attitudes to be this different -
@Map of the Stars, no, I mean... Look, you don't take Hetalia seriously, do you? Let's imagine Durarara!! as a comedy Anime. Will it still look the same? It will be much more easier to compare it to Hetalia then, but now, due to the seriousness of it, characters work out in a different way. They don't run naked and don't joke about condoms, you know. So at least for me it's quite hard to imagine some.. things. And compare those two Animes. When I said Gilbert is more serious than Izaya I didn't mean he is not a troll. They both are. Wrong, Izaya is accepted as a troll even in the Durarara!! novels, but not Prussia. I'm gonna completely agree with mademoiselle_massacreuse on this one. She mentioned everything I wanted to write myself about these two. BTW, I didn't say Prussia is serious. I said he is MORE serious than Izaya. That's a difference. 8D
But gotta disagree with Hungary not being serious. In my opinion, she IS quite serious when Austria isn't mentioned. When he is, she just forgets everything and starts drooling/dreaming about him, and all that jazz. True, she is not as serious as Namie is. But then again, I doubt Hungary is as happy and cheery with Prussia as she is with Austria. To thumb it up, I think those two pairings are quite similar to each other, but not the characters. -

Oh god, wall-o-texts! I'm sorry, guys! ;^; I didn't mean to spark a debate or anything with this image, haha.
@Gikari Ah, I'm sorry I misunderstood your words. D:
All I can really say is that I think we're all looking waaay too much into this. xD I think they're similar, I don't think they're the SAME. Though I totally agree that they're more similar in relationship dynamics rather than as characters (well at least in Namie and Hungary's case...)
@lawdyshorts OMG! How the hell didn't I make that connection before? Namie is TOTALLY like Belarus! Ffff- -
I love both of these pairings XD and Izaya.
-

I can see how Hungary would be portrayed as Namie seeing as how cruel she can be (To Prussia in particular- as Namie is to Izaya), but Namie is much too cold as Hungary is described as a bright and cheerful girl. I love them both though and the pairings :P
-
Doesn't Hungary only get ****ed at France cuz hes a perv?
-
May 06, 2012
Namie is more of a Belarus charcter being in love with her borther and all, hungary and Prussia is more of an Izaya and Shizuo, one, I'm not shipping Shizaya.. but there relationship is closer to that..

Namie,on this debate(i dont think anyone's going back to this anymore -.-) is not quite the bitch everyone says she is.She's just head-over-heels in love with her brother she's completely oblivious of everything else you know?Unlike Hungary however,she isn't that violent(well,yes,in a different way)she's got a sharper mouth than any other character in Durarara!(but Izaya,for that matter)She attacks Izaya very much the same way Hungary did to Prussia(although it hardly ever hit him) ans their relationships are the same,heck,even history.She doesn't particularly hate him for any reason,she only hates him because he used her,and her brother,in his little 'game'.Much like Prussia and Hungary are childhood friends they're once allies,too.Although I can't say Izaya think of Namie the same way Prussia think of Hungary.
-
Both pairings are my favorite actually. <3
-
I like this kinda 'normal' pairing.and Namie is not a bitch..
-
Just no.

Hungary and Prussia are friends though. Frenemies anyway. Namie hates Izaya.

namie... That bitch is nor Hungary-chan!
-
@KarLouiie I agree with you! And in my opinion, Izaya is too wonderful for a woman like Namie, she doesn't deserve him at all. Honestly I still cannot comprehend why people accept a relationship for Izaya where the object of "affection" is so un-special as to be labeled just another human (the only humans I know that Izaya seems to think completely differently of are Shinra, whom he calls a "friend", and Shizuo, whom he accuses to be a "monster", but instead envies like mad). Moreover, Izaya and Namie are not interested/in love with each other (Izaya thinks of her as an awful person and says that he "loves" her as he loves all other humans, while Namie despises him deeply and has even considered the idea of poisoning his food, but in the end she didn't do it because he pays her) so... XD
